After using Lighttpd for a couple of months, I wasn’t really happy with it, so I have decided to move from Lighttpd to Nginx, which is another open-source lightweight web server. In this tutorial, I am going to go over setting up Nginx, MySQL, and PHP5 on an Ubuntu server.

1. Install Nginx

aptitude install nginx
For some reason Nginx does not start automatically when it is installed, so we need to start Nginx.

I have wanted to switch from Apache to Lighttpd for my web server for quite a while. In this article I am going to go over my installation of Lighttpd, MySQL with phpmyadmin, and PHP5 on Ubuntu 8.10. In a future article I will go over setting up my sites to run on Lighttpd. I am running a 256mb ‘slice’ from Slicehost. For the basic setup of my slice I followed Slicehost’s Ubuntu Intrepid Setup Tutorial.

I’m going to explain how to setup a lightweight Apache and MySQL to work on a smaller server such as SliceHost’s 256mb VPS. This will work on both Debian and Ubuntu servers. You are going to install Apache 2 and MySQL like you normally would. After you install it, we are going to edit the config files to better utilize your available memory. To do this you need to be logged in via SSH to your server.
