What to look for in Ubuntu 9.04, Jaunty Jackalope (Due in April 2009)
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) has been out for 3 days now, so I figure it’s time to look into the future at Ubuntu 9.04, the Jaunty Jackalope. Below are a few of the goals that have been set for this next version of Ubuntu.
Faster boot times
One of the goals of Ubuntu 9.04 will be to speed it up. According to Mark Shuttleworth, one of the goals for the next version of Ubuntu will be to speed up the boot time. He states that this is extremely important on devices in which Ubuntu is tailored to. Shuttleworth states that “The Jackalope is known for being so fast that it’s extremely hard to catch, and breeds only when lightning flashes. Let’s see if we can make booting or resuming Ubuntu blindingly quick.”
Weblications
Another goal of Jaunty will be to integrate desktop applications and web services together.
Bazaar Integration
The final goal is to migrate Ubuntu to Bazaar which will allow developers to publish their changes and branch packages with the bzr command.
I am looking forward to the release of Ubuntu 9.04, the Jaunty Jackalope and the exciting new features that it will bring.

Hopefully they add “splashy”, too!

BZR integration means some interesting possibilities for community development:
Help –> Modify this app.
…Could open “this” BZR-held program’s code in an IDE so that changes are as easy as modifying some lines & hitting “Send to Bzr”.
